But when an attempt to gain a visa to the United States failed, and Nazis began to arrest his Jewish friends and take them to concentration camps, he decided his family should go into hiding. He managed to evade a law banning Jews from owning businesses by putting his company, Opekta, which sold pectin for home cooks, in the hands of sympathetic colleagues. Their bicycles, radios, and other items were confiscated and given to gentiles.Īfter the invasion, Anne’s father, Otto Frank, became increasingly concerned for his family. Among other laws, Jews were not allowed to use public transportation, practice various professions, or attend the same schools as non-Jews. Five days later, the Dutch government fled, and the country surrendered to the Nazis, who swiftly took over the nation’s civil institutions and began to impose the same restrictions on Jews that they had instituted in Germany. 6/12/2023 0 Comments The book thief editionsPeople observe the colors of a day only at its beginnings and ends, but to me it's quite clear that a day merges through a multitude of shades and intonations, with each passing moment.Ī single hour can consist of thousands of different colors. A billion or so flavors, none of them quite the same, and a sky to slowly suck on. I do, however, try to enjoy every color I see-the whole spectrum. Personally, I like a chocolate-colored sky. The question is, what color will everything be at that moment when I come for you? What will the sky be saying? The only sound I'll hear after that will be my own breathing, and the sound of the smell, of my footsteps. There might be a discovery a scream will dribble down the air. I will carry you gently away.Īt that moment, you will be lying there (I rarely find people standing up). It suffices to say that at some point in time, I will be standing over you, as genially as possible. You will know me well enough and soon enough, depending on a diverse range of variables. I could introduce myself properly, but it's not really necessary. I am in all truthfulness attempting to be cheerful about this whole topic, though most people find themselves hindered in believing me, no matter my protestations. Long before his adventures in finance, the future robber baron was a young man on the make in his native Catskills, working as a surveyor and mapmaker in his natal place of Delaware County, where he had grown up side by side with the future writer and naturalist John Burroughs. He also left behind a reputation as one of Wall Streets most shrewd, astute, and (some said) manipulative operators. The world building was great! Set in Barbados there was lots of culture, accents, and lifestyles I haven’t learned much about before! All of the facts about River/Sea Mummas (mythological creatures) were well done and added to wrap-up the story with a perfectly logical fantasy explanation. “ Crack! The O’Brien player stares at his broken stumps in disbelief.” The Mariss plotline was definitely the slowest, and that was the part of the synopsis which made me want to pick up the book. Since there are three major plot lines, something was always going on, but sometimes all plot lines were falling flat, or all picked up and it was sort of annoying. The pacing was odd, but I was invested enough in the story to read like a maniac. 100 pages on day one, 100 more pages on day 2, and 108 pages on the final day to finish it off. I’ve never heard of a more original story, and I devoured it. Josephine is balancing cricket practice with grades, and scaring away her father’s girlfriends. Josephine Against the Sea is a middle-grade contemporary fantasy about Josephine, who thinks her father’s girlfriend is an evil sea creature. Recommended if you like kind of steamy historic romance novels, though it's mild compared to some of Loretta Chase's other novels. chase usually has the characters married at the 60-70% mark with more plot after that.Ĥ.5 stars. i think it's necessary in creating convincing relationships but if you're used to a quick fall in love plot and then "the end" this might not be for you. The only real complaint i have and i anticipate other readers will have as well is how long this book is. and i always swoon at the end when everything is tied up in a pretty bow. i always find myself grinning like a big idiot at the jabs and insults the characters throw at each other. I really don't think loretta chase has an equal in writing banter between heroine & hero. they really take the time to set up place, plot, and characters in a way that makes me fall even more deeply in love with character relationships. While i adore the popular historical romance authors of the moment (tessa dare etc), i really have to say how much i appreciate some of the older authors. I think i have a new fav historical romance author! 6/11/2023 0 Comments Suleika between two kingdomsSuleika's realizations opened my eyes to my own truths and humanity. How can he choose? However, he must choose he decides that the right to state government is more important and resigns from the United States Army. Here, Lee struggles with the battle between his belief in Virginia's sovereignty as a state and the principles of the nation for which he has already taken three bullets. I think history tends to cast Lee as a "traitor," but With Lee in Virginia shows a different side of the man. President Lincoln even offered him the position of commander of the Union army. In fact, Lee - the son of Revolutionary War hero "Light Horse Harry" Lee - graduated from West Point with an unblemished record, proved his mettle on the battlefield of the Mexican American War, and returned to West Point as an instructor. However, it's important to remember than many of the soldiers - from infantry on up to Supreme Commander General Lee - were once soldiers in the Federal army. losers" mentality, especially in the current political climate. There is plenty to study about the Union generals, but the leaders of the Confederacy are often overlooked. History tends look at war from the side of the victor, and the Civil War is no exception. 6/10/2023 0 Comments My Highland Lover by Maeve GreysonAs the new chieftain of the MacKenna clan, he has reason to believe that there’s a traitor in his midst, and nothing-not even the bonny lass who suddenly drops from the sky-can distract him from his single-minded pursuit of the culprit.
